Fablab

A snow camouflage net, wrapped, folded, cut and sewn builds up these organic forms around FABLAB, a shop that gathers a collection of young artisans/stylists from all over the world, located in Tel Aviv.

A long and narrow space, 4.65 m high with only one window as a unique source of natural light and a tight budget and schedule for planning and executing permitted us to organize the process in two stages.

The first stage consisted of the technical-functional program of the shop through the installation of various systems and the formation of vast storage spaces. The second stage, however, was that of action-drawing on-site where we composed the silhouette of the space by using metal bars and strings to install the white net. In making this mobile fabric three-dimensional, we’ve applied tournure, the nineteenth-century construction technique of couture. It was used for substructures to support the drapery and lining of the ample skirts of that period. The tournure-walls were composed following a purely intuitive spatial awareness rather than a programmatic one.
Articulating the wall centimeter by centimeter and observing the proportions of the forms and imagining the depth of the profiles, the net was then stretched or folded according to the needs of the yet to be composed wall.

The furniture of various periods, a heritage of the shop owners, were located on the different levels of the space, staged as a museum exhibition of a tailor’s collection. The presented objects and outfits are scattered and operate as micro-forces inside and in-between the wearable forms of the place.
